A lot of water has gone under the bridge this year...

...but at least now I know the name of the river. It's the Po.

Perhaps I should explain?

My frequent absence during the past several months is because we're moving to Turin, Italy. That's also the reason for the two trips we took this fall/winter. Bob has gotten a job with an Italian law studio promoting reciprocal relationships between law firms in the US and Italy. We should move in August.

For months, I really couldn't tell anyone what we were doing. For one thing, we didn't know what was going to happen ourselves. And perhaps that was just as well, because it took a while for all of us to get used to the idea. But now it's pretty much a certain thing.

How exactly will this move work? On many of the logistical questions, your guesses are as good as mine. This move is a big step in the dark. But I trust that, whatever happens, the Lord directs our steps. And we hope to find out more as we go along.

So, I guess we'll be a Torino family now.

Wow, Laura, that is so exciting! I'm sure you probably have mixed feelings, but honestly, that seems like such an amazing opportunity. I have to admit that M. and I are struggling a bit with envy, as for the last few years she has been talking about studying language in Europe and wanting to live there, etc. Well, I wish you all the best. I can't even imagine all the details that need to be tended to. At least you all have been studying the language for sometime and have been able to visit several times. That should help! :) I do hope that you'll continue blogging. Though of course I'd continue reading your blog were you to move someplace much less intriguing, I really am looking forward to reading about life in Italy with you all!

What a brave thing for the three of you to do. My congratulations, and admiration as well.

If you haven't seen it yet, watch "The Italian Job" (the 1969 original with Michael Caine). A very different view of Turin, and funny.

Thanks for the well-wishes, everyone!

Silvana, you are absolutely right that there are a lot of details. I've already run into loads of paperwork, compounded by cultural muddle. I probably will do some sort of blog for it, just because it would be so comical one day for me to look back on my initial impressions and mistakes! And perhaps M. and others could learn from it. I've certainly Googled a lot of "living in Italy" type blogs myself lately!

Rick, thanks for the movie recommendation. I'll look that one up!

I haven't read any blogs in a few weeks, so I'm stunned to hear that ya'll are moving to Italy! What an adventure! Is it long term or short term?

Hi Debbie,

The answer is, I don't know, but I am treating it as though it is long term. The reasons are: It's a two-year contract with the option to renew, and that we moved to NYC for two years, 13 1/2 years ago!

At any rate, living in two places at once is complicated, so we're selling and taking our belongings with us, learning the language, and trying to settle in for a while.

But Bob will still have to come back to NYC frequently on business, and of course we'd like to join him as often as possible. And we'll also still be visiting the relatives in Georgia.
