The Upper West Side, this morning

As I was finishing up my somewhat nostalgic post on West Point (see below), Bob sent me an e-mail which included this snippet from his commute:

"I'm on the subway and a man sneezes.  A woman sitting a few feet away says, 'Cover your mouth when you sneeze.'  He said, 'I tried,' She yelled, 'Don't just try, DO IT!! Nobody wants to breathe your germs!'

Don't you just love New York?'"

I liked the contrast between the two posts.  And yes, my husband was being sarcastic.  But I really do think he loves New York.

Below are some photos from C.Z.'s photo assignment for this week, which was street photography.

This guy was doing a dance.

We liked this guy's hat (above), but wouldn't you know it, we got on the elevator on the way home from our walk, and our neighbor showed us a photo on his iPhone of a guy walking across Broadway wearing a cat on his head!  Well, I guess this was our first day out, and we'll graduate to cat-wearing types eventually.

Still no cat...

Oh, two really fun posts at once! I love the street photography, and I hope CZ will do more (and you'll post it). It's interesting to get a look at the different aspects of your life in New York. Funny about the cat hat! :-) And I loved Bob's story.

The post about your hometown was interesting and even important. I just loved reading your memories. I hate to be a cynic (and I'm not entirely!), but I'm doubtful kids today will have many of these childhood memories with their lives so organized and their faces looking at their cell phones as they endlessly text their friends (my niece showed me how kids do this in class at school without being caught) and ears busy with iPods. Kids are so very plugged in nowadays. Does anyone really play and explore and get to know those in the community anymore? Yes, I know they do, but it's becoming rarer, I think.

Oops. The commentary just slipped out! But I did enjoy your thoughts.

What a great photo assignment. Looking forward to more.

Susan, I confess that as a child I probably watched more TV than was good for anyone. But there were fewer distractions, for sure. And it was nice having grandparents nearby.

I always like your commentaries!

Jody, we have a great symbiotic relationship--I like your sheep and hills, and you like our flat streets with eccentric characters, although, as C.Z. pointed out, you may not actually *like* our streets, only the photos of them. Ahem, if the photographer says so herself ;-)!

Those pictures are great! CZ has a good eye! And...well...you just don't see street life like that just anywhere!

And I really enjoyed your post about your home...Georgia, the place you grew up, the land and people that surrounded you as you became *you*. That environment is now etched on your heart in such a beautiful way.

Your childhood memories are so lovely. It makes me realize I need to sit and take some time with my own. It also reminds me about the environment I desire to etch my girls' hearts. I so often do the day-by-day without thought of the big picture.

Thanks, Laura, for this glimpse into your life!
